02 Mar Tipping Your Movers
At Integrity Movers, we are grateful that you put all your faith in us as your chosen moving company in Portland. You are entrusting all your possessions, prized and otherwise, to people you might not have ever been introduced to before they show up to take your stuff and load it into a truck. Movers have a lot more at stake than most service industry professionals. After all, if a waitress drops your veggie omelette, she can just get you a new one, but if a mover drops your treasured family heirloom, there is no replacing that. These high stakes mean that movers are some of the hardest-working people in the business, and offering a tip–whether it is cash, lunch, or both–is considered proper etiquette.
Most clients have a lot of questions when it comes to tipping the movers. How much should I give? Should I offer lunch? Who do I give the money to? When it comes to tipping your movers, our guys do not expect it, but it is appreciated when given. More than anything else, it’s a sign that you recognized all their hard work and thought they did a good job. Having cold water or sports drinks on hand is also a courteous gesture. Some of our clients prefer to buy the crew lunch in lieu of a cash tip and this is also an appreciated gesture.
As with any other service provider, if you are going to tip cash, you should base it on job performance. A bad attitude or sloppy work habits wouldn’t be tip-worthy. If, however, you feel our crew was attentive, helpful, and professional, you should give what you think is fair. There is varying advice on how much to tip. Percentages don’t really work as they do in a restaurant. The price difference between a cheaper move and a more expensive one could be more to do with distance than with number of boxes. Basically if it’s a half-day (about 4 hours) move, $10 per person is considered appropriate. If it’s a full-day move, then $20 per person is more fair. If you have a lot of heavy furniture, or a lot of stairs or a steep lot, or if the move takes 12 or more hours, figure on about $40 each. You can give the entire amount to the owner or manager, but the best thing to do is give each individual mover their tip–it shows you recognize and appreciate each of their efforts.
At Integrity Movers, we have the hardest-working crew in the business. They go out of their way to take exceptional care with your possessions and are courteous, upstanding, and professional. Give us a call to book a FREE estimate and see how Integrity Movers can help make moving easy for you!
