Donate, Donate, Donate!

As you prepare for your big move and begin packing your things, you will undoubtably find that there are many items you do not want to bring to your new home. Instead of tossing those chipped coffee mugs in the trash, or heaving your old bedroom carpet in the dumpster, consider donating your family’s unwanted items for a good cause.

Goodwill Industries and The Salvation Army

When you donate your gently used and unwanted items to Goodwill, you are helping members of our community, including veterans, military service members, single mothers, and others, find jobs, build skills, or access family and financial services. By donating to Goodwill, you are also making a smart choice for our planet—Since 2012, Goodwill and its contributors have kept billions of pounds of clothes and household items out of landfills. Visit The Goodwill Industries of Northern New England to find the location nearest you.Â

Funds raised through your donated goods help fund rehabilitation centers that help hundreds of thousands of people across the country. Salvation Army rehabilitation centers help those struggling with addiction receive the emotional and constructive guidance they need to overcome addiction and provide for themselves and their families. Salvation Army accepts donations of household items, clothing, appliances, and vehicles. You can even schedule a pick-up through their website and they will come and do all of the heavy lifting for you. Or, stop by their Portland location to make donations in person.

Used Books

Consider donating your used books, high-quality magazines, DVDs, CDs, and video games to the local Portland public library. As long as donations are not too worn out or outdated, and contain no mold or mildew, the PPL can accept donations for their semi-annual book sales, which are used to purchase new library materials or pay for special programs. You can leave your donation at the loading dock of Elm Street library location any time, or bring smaller donations to your local branch anytime. If you have any questions about your donation, please call 207-871-1700, ext. 756.

Habitat for Humanity Re-Store

The Habitat for Humanity Restore is a great place to donate before a move or during a home renovation. Things you might automatically throw away like old Formica countertops, cabinets, sinks, faucets, door knobs, light switches, ceiling fans, rugs, or furniture can be donated to be resold to other homeowners and do-it-yourselfers. Proceeds from the sale of these items will be used to fund Habitat for Humanity projects across the state and across the northeast.

How will you donate today?

By reducing the number of items to pack and move ahead of time, you will save time and money on moving day. You will also be making a tax-deductible donation while helping invigorate your local community and helping others. The Salvation Army has provided this free valuation guide to help you itemize all of the goods you donate. Whether you choose to donate to one of these organizations or find another worthy cause, your unwanted items could be put to good use to help our local community. After donating, choose Integrity Movers, Portland, Maine’s best moving company, to help you and your family transition into your new home.
